Third Party Graded and Slabbed Coins
We are strong supporters of the concept of slabbing Australian coins when the third party grading company is one of the big three companies from the USA. Namely, PCGS, NGC, and ANACS. When a coin is graded by an independent company it is assigned a numerical grade and placed in a sonically sealed plastic container where it cannot be tampered with, and is protected from environmental damage. When the independent company is a reputable one, namely PCGS, NGC, or ANACS you're likely to get a coin that is graded to a consistent standard (for that company) and a grade that is applied without bias or market interest. The same cannot be said generally for coins available from online auction sites.
Third party graded coins will provide you (and us because we still collect coins) with greater peace of mind when purchasing a coin. The coin is protected, it is unlikely to be cleaned or tampered with, and the numerical grade while not the be all and end all, is certainly a good way of measuring the grade of a coin. Where possible we'll be selling third party graded and slabbed coins from the Purple Penny online shop because we believe it provides you with peace of mind, gives us the satisfaction of selling cons that are genuine and graded accurately, and because we believe TPG grading is the way of the future.
