Scientists, aboard the CSIRO research vessel (RV) Investigator, have explored the deep-sea and ocean abyss, discovering amazing and unique creatures of the deep. We celebrates these journeys of scientific endeavour, and the wondrous creatures they discovered in the design of this 2023 $1 ‘C’ Mintmark Silver Proof Coin.
The reverse of the coin shows the CSIRO research vessel (RV) Investigator and its deep tow camera, as well as brittle star (Ophiuroidea), gold coral (Chrysogorgia), and spiny king crab (Neolithodes flindersi). The presentation case depicts the Blob fish, an iconic deep sea creature with its grumpy, forlorn-looking face often crowned the world’s ugliest animal. Coin displayed in a capsule in presentation case and themed outer box.
